the Gazi factory

Gazi: a gasworks factory
becomes the main entertainment / nightlife hub of Athens.

The district of Gazi, about a mile west of Athens city center is nowadays one of the main entertainment / nightlife hubs of Athens. This was initially the site of a gasworks factory (hence the name). It was planned outside of city borders next to Kerameikos and close to the Acropolis by François Théophile Feraldi a French businessman in 1857. It was constructed in various phases and remained in operation in various forms from 1860 till 1984.

The area around the factory was a neighborhood of laborers employed in the factory as well as connected businesses, living in one-floor houses with few rooms and large gardens. These were generally home to large, poor families from Athens. It was a deprived area, more reminiscent of a village than a city neighborhood!

In the last 35 years two major events transformed the area: the closing of the factory in the '80s and the designation of the site as an historic landmark by the City of Athens and the Ministry of Culture. The subsequent transformation of the factory site into an cultural complex under the name of "Technopolis", widely known as "Gazi", with exhibition and concert spaces, operated by the City of Athens, the opening of various bars, pubs, restaurants, and shops transformed the area as a main entertainment and nightlife hub of Athens.
