The whole area of Makrygianni has blossomed into a hip, upmarket and warmly welcoming neighbourhood. The Makrygianni area, also known as «Acropolis», is located at the extreme North of Koukaki on the South of the Acropolis. Dionysiou Areopagitou street is an urban border separating the Acropolis from Makrygianni. It's an upper-class area where among others the Acropolis Museum, the Centre for the Acropolis Studies and the Lalaounis Jewelery Museum are located

At the junction of Makrigianni and Dionysiou Areopagitou streets, stands the of Ioannis Makriyiannis, a Greek general of the Greek war of Independence in 1821. The entire area was named after him.
