Do we need sun protection in Greece ?

Sun over the Parthenon

Why do we need to use a sun protection? Well, if protection against skin cancer isn’t enough to persuade you, it’s also recognized as the best and most effective anti-ager when it comes to preventing premature wrinkles.

Understandably though, many of us assume that wearing a sunscreen is reserved to sweltering summer days spent on the beach but actually, even the cloudiest of climes can be causing damage to your skin. In fact, approximately 80 per cent of UV rays still penetrate through clouds so it’s absolutely vital to apply an Sun Pprotection all-year round.

What are the top five reasons why everyone should wear sunscreen?

  • The ozone layer is depleting and your body needs shielding from harmful rays.
  • Skin cancer rates are on the rise and sunscreen has been proven to decrease the development of skin cancer.
  • It helps to prevent facial brown spots and skin discolorations.
  • It also helps to reduce the appearance of facial red veins and blotchiness.
  • It slows down the development of wrinkled, premature aging skin.

sun protection simple tips

the Greek sun is shining more than 250 days per year!

The hours between 10.00 and 16.00 are the most hazardous for UV exposure in Greece and being next to the water, or on board, maximizes the chances of a sunburn in just a few seconds.

Use sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15+ and both UVA and UVB protection and remember that Sunscreen wears off, so put it on again if you stay out for more than two hours and after you swim or if you sweat. It's important to check the sunscreen's expiration date. If expired the protection will be defective.

But what about Vitamin D?

As you get older, it is quite likely you will become deficient in Vitamin D. The problem is more the amount of time we all spend indoors these days rather than how often you wear sun protection. If you are worried, take 5 minutes of mild sun exposure every day and include Vitamin D rich foods in your diet to ensure you are getting all you need.

The Danish Cancer Society in 2017 launched a campaign on sun safety advice for Danes tourists who love to spend their holidays in Southern Europe, where their delicate skins are in danger. The campaign called “Help a Dane”, is aimed at people from the sunny countries most visited by Danish tourists.

Through a funny video in French, Greek, Italian, Spanish and Thai language (well, sort of) locals are cordially invited by Danish TV presenter Mikael Bertelsen to share their knowledge about prevention of sunburns with unaware Nordic vacationers, too happy for doing the right thing alone, starting from the well-known recommendation to sit in the shadow, wear a hat and apply regularly sun protection filters.
